As defined by the dictionary, mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique. Mindfulness is often practiced through meditation and yoga, but there are some quick and interesting methods you can do at home:
-Focusing on your senses, also called Five Four Three One, I have personally used this one when I'm feeling worried or upset. Name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can feel/touch, and one thing you can smell. You can also eat a snack to exercise the taste sense!
-Keeping a journal is also a wonderful way to practice mindfulness. Writing out thoughts can help you process them, and can even be calming. A journal could also be an arts and craft project if you decide to decorate the cover or pages! Journal entries don't even need to be long, even just a sentence a day works!
Next week, we'll start a weekly "journal prompt" blog post, so keep your eyes peeled and get your journals ready!
